Valentine’s Day is around the corner. I’m usually too cheap to buy the standard Valentine cards at the store. If I have time, I opt for handmade. They turn out cuter and are often much easier to make than they seem.
Thanks to these cute little muslin bags and some stencils and paint I had lying around, an easy and cute DIY Valentine’s Day craft was only 10 minutes away. An added bonus was that the kids had a blast making them.
Heads-up: I will say that if you are planning on doing something like this, consider your mommy mood first. If you’re feeling free and easy, go for the craft paint. If you’re already stressed, save your sanity and give the kids some ultra-washable markers instead. Just realize that if the bags get washed for some reason, the drawings won’t make it.
DIY Valentine’s Day Craft | What You Need
- Muslin bags
- Acrylic craft paint
- Small paint brush
- Stencils (or, if you don’t want to deal with the stencil and paintbrush, you could use stamps or a plain old sponge cut into a heart shape)
DIY Valentine’s Day Craft | Tips for Success
Once you have the supplies, set yourself up with some water and a clean workspace. I also like to put the paint on a paper plate.
I usually stick to an analogous color scheme (i.e., colors that are next to each other on the color wheel). That way, when my daughter decides to mix everything together, she won’t end up with a murky brown. 😉 #beentheredonethat
If you decide to use paint (instead of washable markers), be sure to put some paper, cardboard, or something inside the bag first. This will keep the paint from bleeding through to the other side.
If your little one will be painting over a stencil, help him or her to keep the stencil still on the bag. If it moves around a lot, the design won’t work.
